A Government spokesperson has confirmed that Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has plans to refund all water charges charged to the Irish public by the end of this year.

According to RTÉ, the grand total to be refunded is believed to be in the region of around €170 million.

A number close to one million customers are understood to have paid their dues to Irish Water for aforementioned water charges, a regime introduced under the previous Fine Gael/Labour coalition government.

And while it is not yet clear how exactly the refunds will be doled out, a spokesperson has said that legislation has not been ruled out.
