The Funniest Irish Stereotype Has Been Revealed Ahead Of Paddy’s Day

James Fenton

“Top of the mornin’ to ya” is exactly what Irish people DON’T hear every day on their way to work and that has been somewhat reflected in the fact that the phrase has been voted Ireland’s funniest stereotype.

The study was carried out by Bic, the world’s leading lighter manufacturer, in order to reveal the lighter sides of Irish life (geddit?).

433 Irish adults were surveyed and some of the key findings are as follows:

  • “Everyone in Ireland says ‘top of the mornin’ to ya’” is the funniest Irish stereotype

  • Almost half (46%) of those polled truly believe that St. Patrick banished the snakes from Ireland
  • 30% of adults in Ireland have failed to make it into work after Paddy’s Day celebrations
  • More than half (54%) of the nation have met someone who thought leprechauns were real
  • 1 in 3 name “the people” as the best thing about Ireland

After the winning stereotype, the next two funniest misconceptions about Ireland were ‘all Irish people do is drink’ (27%) and the age-old presumption ‘that everyone in Ireland has red hair and freckles’ (11%).

All we do is drink? We’re insulted. *cracks Guinness can*
