In Ireland, our sporting success seems to come in cycles – with athletics, boxing and swimming just some of the disciplines that have come to the world’s attention over the last few years.
However, there’s no denying that we’re in a golden age of rowing in Ireland at the moment with several high-profile successes in recent times.
The latest came this weekend, with Cork duo Mark O’Donovan and Shane O’Driscoll storming to victory to claim the gold in the lightweight men’s pair event at the European Rowing Championships.

There was further success for the Irish, with Gary and Paul O’Donovan taking silver in the lightweight men’s double sculls and Denise Walsh also claiming a silver medal in the lightweight women’s single sculls.
