This Just In – JobBridge Is Being Scrapped From This Friday

Alana Laverty

JobBridge will cease to accept new applications from Friday, announced Minister for Social Protection, Leo Varadkar, today.

The national internship scheme has apparently “served its purpose” and will be replaced by a new programme.

“The programme will close to new applications from this Friday and will be wound down. Those currently on the programme will be able to complete their internship,” he said.

The controversial and heavily criticised scheme was launched in 2011 and provided work experience opportunities for unemployed people. Internships offered could last up to nine months and allowed participants to earn an extra €52 per week on top of their social welfare payment.
