An investigation is currently underway after an man, believed to be in his 70s, has died in a house fire in County Cork.

The fire broke out in a downstairs room in the house at Old Friary Road, Shandon Street, on the north side of the city, at around 11:30am today.

The man, who has not yet been named, was well known in the area and had been living alone.

The alarm was raised by a neighbour who noticed smoke coming from the home. Three units of Cork City Fire Service attended the tragic blaze, however the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body was removed to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem will take place in the coming days.

The fire is still under investigation, but Gardaí say it is not being treated as suspicious.
