There is a fake Vodafone email doing the rounds in Ireland that can encrypt data on your computer.
Newstalk reports that the email carries the Nemucod trojan, which can encrypt the data on your computer and even demand ransom.
The email claims to be from Vodafone, and comes in the form of a bill, asking customers to pay it.
It’s believed that the malicious software can be found in the link in the email which, when clicked through, will cause harm to your computer.
Vodafone’s website outlines some tips to help protect you from such emails:
“Security Alert!
Please be aware – there has been a number of online scams posing as Vodafone recently. Vodafone only use secured webpages.
Before you enter any personal information (especially passwords) or financial information make sure that the website belongs to us. If you’re unsure, we have some advice here.”
So if you get an email claiming to be from Vodafone, be way and double check with Vodafone themselves that it’s legit.
