"How could I not give myself the best chance of survival?"
We’ve teamed up with Vhi to bring you the Reasons to Run podcast. Each week we speak to a guest about their running journey in the build up to the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon on June 2.
On this week’s episode, podcaster and radio presenter, Georgie Crawford, opened up to us about how exercise became a crucial part of her recovery from cancer.
Georgie was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2017, just six months after having her first baby, daughter Pia.
Having never been a big exerciser before her diagnosis, Georgie told us about the moment that inspired her to incorporate running into her routine.
“I asked myself, ‘what can I learn from this’? I was determined not to go through all of that, and then go back to normal. I needed to grow,” she says.
“I went into my oncologist as I was getting better and she sat me down and she said, ‘Georgie you have got to exercise. If you exercise it’s as effective at stopping your cancer from coming back as this drug we are putting you on.'”
“I left that room and thought, how could I not try my best and give myself the best chance of survival?”
Georgie was determined to find the right exercise for her, and having tried “every machine under the sun” at the gym, she settled on walking and running.
"I realised that my body is amazing, and I'm capable of more than I ever thought I was."
“It was when I was at my lowest point, and I’d get out for a walk with my mum in Marley Park, that I’d get home and I’d feel so much better,” she says.
“I realised that getting outside and just breathing in fresh air and achieving something – there’s no denying the benefits.”
