If you’re looking for some home improvement inspiration, you’ve come to the right place…

With Christmas festivities right around the corner, many of us are turning to DIY to make sure our homes provide the picture perfect setting for evenings of celebrations.

Since we could all do with a helping hand, we’ve teamed up with B&Q and DIY expert Shauna O’Connor to answer all your questions on getting your home spruced up in time for Christmas.

A finalist on RTÉ’s Big DIY Challenge, Shauna is sharing her insider knowledge with us on everything from making the most out of a small WFH space to optimising space in a box room.

Here’s some advice from a DIY expert…

What’s the best colour paint to make a small dark room feel bright and fresh?

Go for a shade of white - there are so many shades to choose from but ultimately you’ll be going for a warm white or a cool white. Warm white is a very welcoming and relaxing shade, so it’s perfect for a living space or a bedroom. Cool white is very contemporary and sharp. Either way - these tones always make the space seem bigger and brighter.

Is it overkill to use statement knobs/handles on every door in the house?

This is entirely subjective but Shauna believes that statement hardware is a fantastic way of adding flair to your home. It’s not permanent, so at the end of the day you can change it as your tastes change! It’s your home, so if it’s what you enjoy and it makes you happy - go for it!

What are their tips for WFH spaces in small properties?

Every home, no matter how small, has some little nook or cranny you can turn into a working from home space. Whether it’s under the stairs, an alcove in your bedroom or even your wardrobe, Shauna recommends browsing through Pinterest to find ideas that suit your space. The two main things to consider is that it’s functional and that you can hide it at the end of the day because no one wants to be looking at their work all evening long!

Navy tiles and navy paint in a small bathroom, good idea or not?

Again, this is totally subjective, but if our expert was using a dark, bold tile colour, she would go lighter on the walls so that the space doesn’t feel too small. However, if you’re looking for an intimate feel - go for it!
