Dublin the “most likely host city” to be stripped of Euro 2020 matches

James Fenton

Dublin’s chances of hosting games at this summer’s European Championships appear to be bleak as a major UEFA deadline approaches tomorrow.

European football’s governing body wants all 12 host cities to confirm whether they will be able to stage games with crowds by close of business on Wednesday. It’s being reported today that due to Covid-19 restrictions in Ireland, Dublin is now the most likely city to be stripped of hosting duties. The capital had been scheduled to host three group games and a round of 16 match this summer.

It is thought that should Dublin be unable to fulfil hosting duties, the matches scheduled to take place in the city will be moved to England, possibly to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Euro 2020 was scheduled to take place last summer across the cities of Amsterdam, Baku, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Glasgow, London, Munich, Rome and Saint Petersburg. However, the tournament was pushed back by a year due to Covid-19.

National associations will meet on Thursday to discuss the situation in each host city.
