WATCH: Yet another sensational League of Ireland goal has gone viral

James Fenton

The League of Ireland has gotten into a habit of producing world class goals and this one from Graham Burke last night can now be added to the list.

The Ireland international was lining out for League of Ireland Premier Division champions Shamrock Rovers against Derry City last night during what seemed like a routine 2-0 win. However, just before half-time, Burke decided to sprinkle some magic on Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium by taking the ball from inside his own half before lobbing from just over the halfway line and down into Nathan Gartside’s goal.

The 27-year-old’s goal isn’t the first from our leagues to go viral, with both Jordan Flores and Stephanie Roche being nominated for a FIFA Puskas award in recent years. In fact, our players’ tendency to pull off the impossible has almost become a running joke across the Irish Sea, with popular Twitter account Football Cliches often giving the strikes a shout-out.

You can watch Burke’s effort in all its glory in the clip below…

As if Gartside wasn’t down enough, a Sportsfile photographer managed to capture the moment he knew his face would be splashed across the internet for days to come…

The clip on the SSE Airticity League Twitter account has been viewed over 160,000 times at the time of writing and it’s just another reason to look forward to crowds returning to League of Ireland stadiums. In the meantime, you can watch every game in the Premier Division on WATCHLOI.ie and in the First Division and Womens National League on LOITV.ie.
