At Bord Gáis Energy we put the power in your hands and you used it wisely. With over 10,000 Hive smart homes units installed since launch, the potential energy efficiency impact of this equates to over 18GWh’s of energy.
It may not seem like much but 18GWh’s is enough energy to produce 1,178,512 Kilos of cotton to make your clothes.
Whether we like it or not, Summer has been and gone. Before we know it, it’ll be Winter. And that means one thing: comfy, stylish Winter fashion.
Winter in Ireland can be rough, so layers are important. And your first thought might be to run straight to the high street. Well, before you do that, you should consider the impact your clothes can have on the environment.
There are plenty of Irish brands that produce their clothes in a sustainable, ethical way. And one of those brands is Bogman Beanie.
Hailing from beautiful County Donegal, Bogman Beanie sells t-shirts, sweaters and, of course, beanies.

And what makes them ‘sustainable’? Well, Bogman Beanie believes in the importance of transparency and ensures that all of their materials are 100% traceable.
Drawing inspiration from the bog, all of their beanies are made with 100% Donegal tweed yarn, so they keep your head warm and dry while letting it breathe in the cold weather.
Plus, their t-shirts look fairly comfy and their bog boyfriend sweaters are unbelievably cosy.

What makes Bogman Beanie more sustainable than most other fashion brands and clothing producers is the amount of time it takes for their products to biodegrade.
On average, it takes items made from synthetic materials anywhere between 20 and 200 years to biodegrade. Whereas pieces made from alternatives such as silk, cotton, wool and bamboo only take between five months and 50 years to decompose.
Also, washing clothes made from nonbiodegradable materials often releases microplastics into rivers and oceans.
In fact, it’s believed that washing just one synthetic item can release as much as 1,900 microfibres into the waterways.
