Irish restaurants have been massively upping their eco-friendly game recently.

Everything from introducing recyclable and compostable options to reducing food waste is now carefully considered by customers and restaurants alike.

Vegan restaurant The Carrot’s Tail in Rathmines that opened up earlier this year is one spot that’s really nailing things thanks to its zero-waste policy and plastic-free promise.

Owners Sebastian and Yeniree have created an impressively accessible vegan experience with sustainability at the heart of everything they do, in a large space on Rathmines Road Lower that’s full of vintage touches and cute framed prints.

The 100% plant-based eatery ensures that nothing goes to waste and everything on their menu is totally cruelty free.

Just inside the door to the restaurant, there’s also a zero-waste shop that sells everything from reusable bottles to vegan dental floss. Most importantly, you can bring along your own containers to fill up on all their products, including grains, organic agave, spices and soaps.

And don’t worry if you ever forget to bring along your container – they have a bank of jars that anyone can use totally free of charge and bring back next time.

The Carrot’s Tail prides itself on creating vegan versions of all your favourite comfort foods using some very inventive methods, from chicken burgers to meatball and mozzarella subs and even a steak cheese sandwich.

There’s ‘zalmon’ made from carrots and nori sheets that tastes exactly like the real thing, while the ‘chikon’ burger is created using a thick slab of crispy fried tofu that’s repeatedly frozen and defrosted before being soaked in stock and then cooked.

No single-use plastic is used whatsoever at Carrot’s Tail and all the packaging that they do use is completely compostable.

Customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable coffee cups as well as tupperware for takeaway food, leftovers and anything else they buy from The Carrot’s Tail shop.

Not only is it one of the best vegan spots around, their dedication to sustainability and zero-waste means that we should all be taking a leaf out of their book.

Bord Gáis Energy has installed thousands of Hive Active Heating units in homes across Ireland, helping our customers improve the energy efficiency in their homes. The energy efficiency impact of this equates to over 18GWh’s of energy.

It takes about 0.0156 kWh in energy for an espresso machine to make a single cup of coffee so 18GWh of energy would get you 480,000,000 cups of coffee! *

*Energy Efficiency impact is based on 10,000+ Hive Active Heating Units and SEAI published savings figure for Entry Level Heating Controls Upgrade only with remote access.
