High Court To Hear Three Challenges Regarding Abortion Referendum Result

It is exactly one month since it was decided by the Irish public that the Eighth Amendment would be repealed.

A landslide majority yes vote was the outcome of the abortion referendum on May 26 following voting the day before but that result is going to be challenged in the High Court on Tuesday.

Three Irish citizens are looking to challenge the result of the referendum, all with different reasons for doing so according to 98FM.

Charles Byrne, a musician from Drogheda states that hundreds of students in NUI Galway were not properly registered.

Joanna Jordan from Dún Laoghaire claims that thousands of Irish citizens were paid to return to vote while Ciarán Tracey, a retired public servant Leitrim, says that an alleged omission from the State’s information campaign affected the overall outcome.

The High Court states that there is not an automatic right to have these challenged heard.

For one, the application must have proof that there is evidence that these issues being put forward, actually affected the overall result.

The arguments were scheduled to be put forward in the High Court on Tuesday morning.
