Australia Is Set To Bring In A Controversial ‘Backpacker Tax’

A controversial tax based around backpackers working and living in Australia has just been signed off, and people are not happy. 

The country’s government had originally wanted to bring in an enormous 32.5% rate, but has eventually settled on a 15% levy on foreign nationals living in Australia, on working holidays.

It has since been lowered after farmers and tourism groups raised concerns about it deterring people going to Australia for working holidays.

At present, backpackers do not start paying tax until their annual income exceeds $18,200 Australian Dollars, just like any other workers.

Treasurer Scott Morrison stated that a compromise has finally been reached: “Today the government will be working to put in place a bill which will propose 15% on the backpackers’ arrangement.”
