The ‘Baptism barrier’ in schools will be officially removed today

The ‘baptism barrier’ is being removed from Catholic schools across the country today meaning religion will no longer play a part in whether a child is admitted or not.

The ban is to stop schools from prioritising children of the same faith over those that live nearby when there is spare capacity – with the exception of minority faiths such as the Church of Ireland.

Education Minister Richard Bruton confirmed he will be signing an order today ‘to ensure greater fairness in admissions’.

It’s hoped it will ease the difficulties facing families in urban areas where school are oversubscribed and where places are more limited.

Other changes being brought in include the banning of school waiting lists and a limit on the number of children that can be enrolled by past pupils.
