Brad Pitt made a gag about Harry in front of William and Kate last night

James Fenton

Okay, full disclosure. Brad Pitt wasn’t actually in attendance at last night’s BAFTAs but he still managed to make a cheeky gag about Prince Harry and the whole royal family rigmarole.

That’s because he left his Best Supporting Actor acceptance speech in the capable hands of his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood pal Margot Robbie and she didn’t let him down. Perhaps having a few butterflies herself about bringing up Prince Harry’s much-publicised royal exit in front of his brother and sister-in-law, the Aussie actress powered through and read Brad’s full unedited version.

Robbie got a few chuckles when delivering the first part of Pitt’s speech, a topical Brexit reference which poked fun at his own new-found single status. The pen of Brad then went on to go through the motions, thanking directors, co-stars and all the rest, or as Margot put it “blah, blah, blah, it’s all a bit much really.”

The real zinger was saved for last when Margot that Brad is “going to name this (award) Harry because he’s really excited about bringing it back to the States with him,” adding that they were “his words, not mine.”

Of course, the camera quickly panned over to William and Kate who, in fairness, were seen laughing along with everyone else. Check out the speech for yourself by watching the clip below, courtesy of PA Entertainment.

William later produced another example of his ability to laugh at himself, by pointing out how many stars in the audience had shot to fame by playing members of his own family in The Crown…

A great time had by all and you’d wonder if Brad Pitt would have made the joke himself if the Atlantic Ocean wasn’t separating him from Harry’s older brother. Perhaps we’ll never know.
