‘C’est La Vie’ Has Been Named As One Of The Best Girl Group Songs Of All Time

James Fenton

“Some people say I look like me da.”

“Wha, are ya serious?”

Who could ever forget the opening spoken words to one of the most iconic pop songs to ever come out of Ireland? Now, ‘C’est La Vie’ by B*Witched has been named among esteemed company as one of the greatest girl group songs of all time by US music magazine Billboard.

The Dublin quartet, consisting of Lindsay, Sinéad and twins Edele and Keavy, burst onto the scene in 1998 with the catchy classic which has been placed at number 97 in the list entitled 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time: Critics’ Picks.

Another 90s gem from this side of the Atlantic, ‘Wannabe’ by the Spice Girls managed to get into the top five while TLC’s ‘Creep’ finished as runner-up behind overall winner ‘Be My Baby’ by The Ronettes.

The article pays tribute the the Irish jig included near the end of ‘C’est La Vie’ and also refers to the apparent sexual undertones of the tune in its blurb, reading:

“If you couldn’t tell from the Irish jig breakdown toward the end of their debut single, B*Witched hailed from the Emerald Isle — but the lyrics to their lone crossover hit, which slyly nod to adolescent sexual experimentation, are universal. They were also subtle enough to fly under the radar of most censors, who were tricked by the absurdly effervescent bubblegum melodies into thinking the lyrics were equally pure.”

The full list can be read here and should make for a great soundtrack for your Tuesday.

All together now: “I’ll huff, I’ll puff…”
