Usually when the Irish go on holiday, the main purpose is to escape the dreary, cold weather and go as far away as possible. However, some of the most stunning cities out there are just a short flight across the pond.
With cheap fares, and super fast flights you could be over to Scotland’s capital within an hour, and it’s so, so worth making the trip.
Upon initially arriving to Edinburgh Old Town, one of the most popular destinations in Edinburgh, you’ll notice how unique the architecture is.
The old, gothic-style buildings run through the medieval city, making you feel like you’ve just stepped into a 15th century photograph.
One of the next things you’ll notice is how many steps there are. Walking along the miles of cobblestone may prove especially tricky at first (definitely not a city for wearing stilettos, girls), but be prepared to do a serious leg workout, as most things are accessible via stairs – a LOT of them.
If you can overcome the stairs and hills, you will absolutely adore what this city has to offer.
Walking along the Royal Mile on a cold, fresh February morning with a hot cup of coffee in hand, listening to the sound of windpipes – there’s just nothing like it.
There is an abundance of cosy cafés and coffee shops, perfect for escaping the cold (it can be freezing) weather for an hour or so.

And when it comes to restaurants, you won’t be stuck for a nice meal because there are plenty of restaurants to choose from, with many offering some of Edinburgh’s finest delicacies (vegans, stop reading now), including their famous haggis.
Haggis, if you didn’t already know, is one of Scotland’s most famous dishes.
It consists of sheep’s liver, lungs, and heart. And although it may not be for everyone, it’s definitely worth trying if you really want to get a taste of Scotland.
Another way to really taste the city is to try a Scottish whiskey, of which there are so many to choose from.
Something you might notice about whiskey in Edinburgh is the unique, warm, and smoky taste it has – ideal for warming up after being outside in the cold.
And if whiskey isn’t your thing, not to worry, because there are plenty of other beverages waiting for you to try.

Edinburgh’s nightlife scene is particularly lively and cheap, making it ideal for students and anyone on a budget.
A multitude of clubs and bars, ranging from glamorous cocktail bars to grungy warehouse nightclubs, means you don’t have to do much more than choose what sort of night you’re looking for and head out.
One of the most outstanding aspects of Edinburgh has to be the Castle.
Perched at the very top of the Old Town, the castle is absolutely breath taking, and the views of the city from the top of the are next to none.
You may have to wait in the queue for a while – it can get pretty busy – but it’s completely worth it.

On your way back down the hill from the castle, it’s definitely worth popping into Edinburgh’s famous optical illusion museum. Whether you’re with children or not, an afternoon at the magical museum is great craic altogether.
Oh, and speaking of magic and illusions, Edinburgh is a must for any Harry Potter fans.

Overall, Edinburgh is, without a doubt, one of the most accessible and budget-friendly cities there is.
Direct services from the airport to the old town run every few minutes, and most things are within walking distance of each other in the city, so you won’t have to worry about splashing the cash on taxis or buses.
