The trailer for the upcoming Cruella film starring Academy Awards winner Emma Stone dropped yesterday, with many fans saying it gives them Joker vibes. It definitely seems more oriented to adults than kids, anyway.

Set in 1970s London, Stone takes up the iconic role of Cruella De Vil (previously played by Glenn Close) for the 2021 Disney release. The trailer reveals a younger version of Cruella and teases a juicy back story detailing how De Vil became the iconic 101 Dalmatians villain.

The movie had an original release date of December 23, 2020. But even before the pandemic, the release date was pushed out to May 28, 2021. This release date has not changed as of yet.

As well as Emma Stone, the highly-anticipated flick stars Love Actually’s Emma Thompson, Game of Thrones’ Joel Fry and Cobra Kai’s Paul Walter Hauser.

In terms of plot, there are a few things we know. As expected, the film will show us how Cruella became Cruella. It will follow the young rebellious woman in 1970s London as she tries to make a name for herself in the city’s fashion scene. In fact, she will be known as Estelle at the start of the movie, and we’ll follow her journey to adopting the title of Cruella. The first trailer, showing Stone’s character hot-wiring cars, filling a bank vault with insects and blowing up a building in the centre of London, certainly reminds us that the upcoming release may be more suitable for mature audiences who grew up getting to know the villainous character in 101 Dalmations, rather than introducing younger audiences to the story.

The movie is said to take place in the midst of the punk-rock scene in London, so we are expecting to be treated to some seriously exciting aesthetics throughout the film.
