WATCH: NI school’s cover of Fairytale of New York in tribute to Shane MacGowan goes viral

A school in Northern Ireland has gone viral for its “brilliant” cover of the Pogues’ classic Christmas single ‘Fairytale of New York’.

Holy Trinity College in Cookstown released its students’ rendition of the song last Wednesday (6 December), the same week as the funeral for Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan.

In a caption accompanying the video, the secondary school wrote: “Well here it is! Our Christmas song of 2023. Have a very happy and peaceful Christmas from the students and staff of Holy Trinity College.

“Show our very talented pupils some appreciation and hit like and share!”

The original clip has since received over 65,000 views. You can watch it right here:

School’s ‘brilliant’ Fairytale of New York tribute to Shane MacGowan goes viral

Vice President of Sinn Féin Michelle O’Neill has shared the video, writing:

“An amazing tribute to the late Shane MacGowan by the pupils and staff at Holy Trinity College, Cookstown.

“This will put a smile on your face, well done to everyone involved!”

Commenting on the clip, meanwhile, one person wrote: “Absolutely incredible stuff, what a talented bunch and what a beautiful tribute. Well done all.”

Another said: “Brilliant to see the talent in Holy Trinity College Cookstown. Congratulations.”

A third commented: “Congratulations to all involved in this production. The vocals are amazing and the musicians are just fabulous. I loved it.”

Responding to the cover going viral, the school wrote: “Our video has made the news! Thanks to everyone who liked/commented/shared.

“We have some amazing talent in HTC and they are delighted with all the support received! They really enjoy doing these musical sessions. There’s plenty more to come.”
