Disgraced Former FIFA President Says Ireland Deserve To Host World Cup

James Fenton

Get planning, lads. The World Cup is coming to Ireland.

That’s if former FIFA President gets Sepp Blatter gets his way. Sky Sports News is today reporting that the 82-year-old, who is currently serving a six-year ban for his part in financial corruption, has said that ‘England or a joint UK and Ireland bid deserve to host 2030 World Cup.’

Given Blatter’s current reputation in the game, his views will likely be taken with a pinch of salt in many places. When the 2018 and 2022 World Cups were awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively, it was widely thought that the countries had paid Blatter and other FIFA executives for their success.

However, given the more transparent voting system now in place (as seen when the U.S.A, Mexico and Canada were awarded the 2026 tournament last week), it’s not outside the realms of possibility that England will host a future World Cup given the plethora of stadia and infrastructure they already have in place. If that happens, Dublin’s Aviva Stadium and Croke Park could well be called in the lend a helping hand.

Having said that, we won’t hold our breath.
