Gap to close 19 UK and Ireland stores next month

American retailer Gap has announced that 19 of its UK and Ireland stores will close next month.

Gap currently has three stores in Dublin (Henry Street, Blanchardstown and Dundrum) as well as one in Limerick. The clothing retailer has said that their shops will close in July when their leases end.

The company announced it was reviewing its operations amidst a fall in trade back in October and considering closing stores in the UK and Ireland as well as France and Italy. A statement said:

“We are proposing to close 19 Gap stores in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland that have leases ending at the end of July 2021.

“These leases are not being extended due to the strategic review that we have under way.”

It also said that the company was “keen to maintain a presence in Europe.”

It has not been clarified yet how many job losses there will be as a result of these closures.
