Homeware stores not included in list of businesses that can open on Monday

James Fenton

Homeware stores will not be reopening as part of phase 1 of the government’s roadmap, it has been reported this afternoon.

RTE has quoted a government spokesperson as saying ‘hardware but not homeware shops can reopen under easing of restrictions.’ Other businesses that look likely to get the all-clear to open on Monday, May 18 are garden centres, farmers’ markets, bicycle shops and motor garages, electrical stores, IT stores and opticians.

Yesterday, IKEA declared its intention to open its Dublin outlets, with social distancing measures in place such as the limiting of groups inside the stores to just two people. However, this afternoon’s news looks likely to cast doubt on whether this can go ahead as planned.

Phase 1 of the government’s roadmap to reopening Irish society is due to begin on Monday and includes the provision that people can meet outdoors in groups of up to four as long as they remain with 5km from home.
