Irish design and sustainability contest to go global in 2021

Fiona Frawley

For the past 10 years, Junk Kouture has been inspiring young designers across the country to create glam, high-end designs using repurposed materials.

Focusing on sustainability, fashion, art and engineering, Junk Kouture annually showcases the designs of secondary school students aged 13-18 across Ireland, which are made using 100% recycled items. And now, Junk Kouture has announced a global tour which will span the world’s 7 continents, culminating with a World Final at the end of September.

The first season will take place digitally across 5 cities – London, Milan, Paris, Dubai and New York, with additional digital shows to follow in Tokyo, Auckland, Sydney, Sao Paolo, LA, Cape Town and Singapore. Then, a full live tour will commence in some of the most iconic venues throughout the world, as Covid restrictions begin to ease.

Next year sixty finalists – 10 each from Ireland, the UK, Italy, America, France, and the UAE, will compete in the digital final. There will be one winner from each region, and one designer will be crowned ‘Junk Kouture World Designer of the Year’.
