TWEETS: Irish Fans Are Divided On Shane Duffy’s ‘Dive’ Last Night

James Fenton

The Republic Of Ireland’s 0-0 draw with Denmark last night isn’t a match that will live long in the memory but, look, at least we weren’t hammered 5-1 like last November’s World Cup play-off against the same opposition.

Ireland arguably could have won the game as well with Jeff Hendrick spurning a golden first half chance and it looked like we could have had a penalty in the dying seconds.

When Shane Duffy went down in the box and the referee blew his whistle, many at the Aviva and those watching on TV thought that Ireland had just been given an opportunity to win the game from the penalty spot. Alas, the Spanish referee pointed in the other direction and presented Duffy with a yellow card for diving.

Take a look at the clip and decide if you think it was the right decision…

It looked to some like the referee was perfectly within his rights to punish Duffy while others felt the yellow card was a bit harsh. On the other hand, some fans felt that Ireland were denied a blatant penalty…

The Derryman has certainly divided opinion. What do you think? Was Duffy hard done by or was the correct decision made? Let us know in the comments.

We’ll leave the final word to Niall Horan, whose tweet confused millions of his international followers, with many of them leaving comments asking who the hell Shane Duffy is.

Ireland return to action on Tuesday night as we face Wales in our third match of the UEFA Nations League campaign. Here’s hoping for a better result than last night.
