Publicans across Ireland have been hit with further bad news, last night learning that they will not be allowed to reopen at the end of this month as initially planned. The third time the reopening of so-called wet pubs has been postponed, pub owners are urging government to step up to the plate and announce a package of additional support for the industry.

With many disgruntled publicans taking to Twitter to express their frustrations, owners at Flannery’s Bar in Limerick have made calls for government to explain the rationale behind the decision.

Sharing an image of a map of Europe, the photo shows that Irish pubs have endured the longest lockdown with over 3,500 establishments still closed.

‘Please explain your rationale & then make the correct decision to open the Irish pubs immediately. We are professionals who can implement & manage procedures to protect our customers & staff.’

With thousands of jobs impact and countless families worried for the future, some have said that pubs should at least be given the chance to prove themselves.

Speaking earlier today, Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe said that he is ‘very aware of the disappointment being felt’ and that government is currently working on a package of supports.
