This Island Is Where You’re Having Your Next Staycation — Here’s Why

These little island paradises are blissfully disconnected from the rest of the world, free from its woes. And while you may think you have to venture all the way to the Caribbean to find the ideal haven, you really only have to look off the coast of Mayo to our very own Achill Island.

The largest island off the coast of Ireland, Achill boasts a majestic coast and countless beautiful spots including the Atlantic Drive route that hugs the coastline, Annagh with the lowest corrie lake in Ireland and the secluded Keem Bay.

People have been drawn to the island for millennia, with the first trace of human existence stretching all the way back to 3000BC whose remains can in fact still be seen. Among the most significant of these historical remnants are the 16th century Tower at Kildavnet and the spooky Deserted Village, comprised of 80 stone cottages located at the foot of the Slievemore Mountain.

There’s a real charm to the place that’s apparent as soon as you lay eyes on it…

Its 40km of coastal scenery is seriously dramatic
