July 5 reopening appears under threat as Ministers express Delta variant concern

James Fenton

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has stated that the situation in Ireland relating to the Delta variant has changed.

Appearing on Morning Ireland today, Donnelly said that it’s “too early to say” whether the planned easing of restrictions on July 5 will go ahead, stating “we know Covid tears up the best laid plans and it’s a rapidly evolving situation with Delta.”

Meanwhile, An Taoiseach Micheál Martin told the Irish Independent that “nothing can be guaranteed as of today, and I think there is growing concern in terms of the increased incidence of the Delta variant.”

When asked if he would accept advice from NPHET, Martin indicated that he would, saying: “I think there’s been a consistency of approach in terms of our relationship with NPHET in recent times, by and large, overall.”

Are number of restrictions are scheduled to be eased on Monday, July 5 including the return of indoor service in pubs and restaurants. More information can be found here.
