A Cork nursing home is asking the public to send letters to the elderly during this challenging time.

The world is living through extraordinary times at the moment, with many countries enforcing strict quarantine and social distancing rules.

However, while others may succumb to the doom and gloom, the Irish have been proving that they’re worth their weight in gold – banding together to show that trying times often bring out the best in people.

Businesses around the country have been using their extra time and resources to help those in need, with locals also doing their bit by offering their assistance to housebound neighbours and all those who are reluctant to leave their homes.

Some of the most vulnerable members of our society, people have made sure to also look out for the elderly in their communities, dropping off supplies and helping with odd jobs around the house.

But with many cut off from the outside world, it’s really the little things that make all the difference which is why St. Luke’s Home in Cork is asking for people to send handwritten letters to the elderly.

Putting the call out on social media, staff at the nursing home wrote:

“At this challenging time, our residents would love to receive post!! If you or your children would like to send us a letter, poem or drawing, our residents would be delighted to see them!

This would benefit our residents and continue to lift their spirits along with providing those of you with small children a little activity to do.”

Anyone who has been to the Gaeltacht or who has spent some time abroad will know the unrivalled joy that a package from home can bring so this would be a lovely way to boost morale.

Letters/photos/artwork can be emailed or posted to the home and staff have also included a list of residents’ first names so that each one can be personalised.

It’s things like this that make us very proud to be Irish.
