Katy Thornton

The actor has been on an acting hiatus for a few years.

Born in Germany as the son of an Irish mother, the Killarney-raised Michael Fassbender returns for a project a little closer to home.

The 46-year-old is set to star in a new biopic about the Belfast-based rap group Kneecap.

The feature film, confirmed in May by Variety, is expected to be a mile-a-minute anti-establishment comedy tracking the trio’s rise to fame and occupation of a unique space in the Irish music scene.

It’s unclear as of yet what supporting role Michael Fassbender will play in the Kneecap biopic.

A return to the screen for Michael Fassbender

If you feel like you haven’t seen a new Michael Fassbender movie in years, you’re right. The Academy Award-nominated actor took a three-year hiatus after reprising his role as Magnito in the 2019 action film Dark Phoenix.

Since then Michael Fassbender has been pursuing his other passion; motorsport. In 2020 he joined the Proton Competition racing teamfor the full 2020 European Le Mans Series. He drove a 2017 Porsche 911 RSR.

He’s now reverted from being behind the wheel to in front of a camera once more, with Kneecap set to be one many projects forming his onscreen return. He did recently star in Next Goal Wins, which is available in theatres, and on Netflix shortly thereafter, in mid November.

Kneecap the film will unsurprisingly feature the trio from Kneecap the rap trio; Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí as heightened versions of themselves.

Kneecap first burst on the scene in 2018 with their unique blend of the Irish language and lyrics frothing at the mouth with nationalist sentiment.

Director Rich Peppiatt is promising “a film true to their [Kneecap] hedonistic and anarchic soul.”

Listening to their hit song ‘Get Your Brits Out’ as I write this, it’s hard not to believe him.
