Amazing – The Mourne Mountains Will Soon Have Their Own Cable Car System

katedemolder

The Mourne Mountains, one of Ireland’s premier tourist destinations, will soon have a a cable car system.

The Donard Gondola scheme will carry lucky visitors up into the mountains from the resort of Newcastle, Co Down, making some of the island’s most stunning views accessible to everyone.

The idea was proposed by the Northern Irish Department for Social Development and local councils, and has since been approved by Newry, Mourne and Down District Councils, paving the way for the project to get under way within the next few years.

According to the original report:

“To fully enjoy the Mournes the visitor must be reasonably fit, be prepared and have sufficient time to complete a trek. The gondola would provide a facility to enable everyone, including families with young children and disabled users, to access the Mourne Mountains.”

A report in the Belfast Telegraph suggests that a cafe may also be built at the top of the cable car line.

Fingers crossed!
