Government highlights when nightclubs could reopen as part of ‘the path ahead’

The reopening of nightclubs is to be considered for ‘later in the year’ as part of the Govenment’s ‘path ahead’ for 2021.

Details of the May and June reopening were announced last night, with hairdressers set to return on May 10 along with inter-county travel and organised outdoor gatherings of up to 15 people. From June 2 hotels and B&Bs will reopen followed by outdoor service for pubs and restaurants on June 7 and if all goes well, nightclubs might follow towards the latter part of the year.

In the Government’s official press release, it says that the ‘next steps’ that will be considered at the end of June ‘for later in the year’ include the following:

• indoor hospitality (restaurants, bars, nightclubs, casinos)
• indoor team/group sports including matches, training and exercise classes
• mass gatherings/events (including spectators) indoors and outdoors
• international travel

It also says that work is continuing on the following for the coming months:

• a plan for an enhanced higher and further education on-campus experience for the new academic year
• proposals on the holding of a limited number of pilot live events for arts, culture, sport and live entertainment (indoor and outdoor). This is to inform the safe reopening of these activities and events when the public health situation allows
• preparation for the safe reopening of cinemas and theatres in June subject to public health advice
