The new movie from the director of Up, Inside Out and Monsters Inc. was due to arrive in cinemas in November.
The pandemic has taken another movie from the big screen schedule, with Disney and Pixar announcing that Soul will be heading straight to Disney+ on Christmas Day, and from the looks of it we will absolutely be crying into our turkey and stuffing because of this one. Because that is what Pixar do better than pretty much anyone else: Make. Us. Cry. With. Feelings.
The movie’s plot looks like it has a somewhat spiritual connection (if not actually connected in any way real) to Inside Out, as it tells the story of a musician (voiced by Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx) who has lost his passion for music is transported out of his body and must find his way back with the help of an infant soul (voiced by 30 Rock’s Tina Fey) learning about herself.
Writer/director Pete Docter has won Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards twice before – for Inside Out and Up – and has been nominated for SIX more Oscars for his work on the likes of Monsters Inc., Toy Story, and WALL-E.
Interesting side note: the music for the film has been provided by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, best known for their work with Nine Inch Nails, and creating the music for dark thrillers like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network, and Gone Girl.
Unlike the release of Mulan, Pixar’s Soul will be available for free for those already subscribed to Disney+. And speaking of Mulan, it will become free to watch for those with a Disney+ subscription from Friday, December 4.
