Reeling in the Years

Speaking to Ryan Tubridy this morning, Reeling in the Years producer John O’Regan described the show as a “time capsule” giving viewers a flavour of things that happened in any given year.

Reeling in the Years is one of shows that is so classically Irish that it’s hard to explain to other people. Yes, the concept is simple to comprehend but it’s very difficult to express the true beauty of the show without having seen it… all the more reason to stick it on expose your friends to its glory. Alternatively, direct them to this article and let them discover it for themselves.

Updating viewers on the status of the 2010 series of the show, Reeling in the Years producer John O’Regan chatted to Ryan Tubridy telling him that, unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until next year to see the next decade. Having last released new episodes ten years ago, fans of the show have been patiently awaiting new episodes for quite some time.

Admitting that production has just started, when asked about the new series John says that it’s “going to be a while”.

“It’s not supposed to be on the air until next year and we’re just starting the production process now. We’ve had our own internal Covid delays and disruption – like many places – in RTÉ. We’re gathering footage. I sit in my back bedroom, working from home.”

According to John, production is concentrating on the early years at the minute with topics covering the likes of Katie Taylor, the London Olympics and the same-sex marriage referendum as well as Brexit, the arrival of Love/Hate on Irish tellies, the MeToo movement and even Garth Brooks’ gigs at Croker. All noteworthy moments in Irish history.

Adding that “there may be several hundred hours” of footage it sounds like the team behind the iconic show will have their work cut out for them. But nothing compared to what will be in store for them when it comes time to putting together the 2020 show.

We can only IMAGINE what that episode will look like… pure and utter mayhem to put it lightly. If we weren’t living through it we’d probably have trouble believing it actually happened. Something to show the grandkids to explain what the start of the new decade was really like.
