Release date and plot details revealed for Sally Rooney’s new book

The award-winning writer of Normal People is releasing her new book this year.

It is entirely fair to say that Normal People was something of a global phenomenon in 2020.

While the show was a huge hit around the world, it also brought even more attention to the book it was based on, resulting in sales for Sally Rooney’s 2018 novel to skyrocket once again.

Normal People won Novel of the Year at the Irish Book Awards that year, just one of many awards that Rooney and her work have won in the last few years, so all eyes have been on the Mayo-born author and when the follow-up might be announced, and what it would be about.

Today, it has been confirmed that Rooney’s third novel will arrive on Tuesday, September 7 this year, and it will be titled Beautiful World, Where Are You.

As per the official synopsis, the book “tells the story of Alice and Eileen, two best friends nearing their thirties in different places and on very different trajectories. As the summer approaches, they exchange emails about art, friendship, the world around them and the complicated love affairs unfolding in their own lives. They say they want to see each other again soon. But what will happen when they do?”

Publisher Alex Bowler had this to say about Rooney’s new book:

“Sally’s new novel is a book of friendship and sex, art and faith, power and love. It absorbs you once again in the inner lives of characters with brilliant minds and aching hearts, while marking the next creative leap from a singular writer. The book scintillates with intelligence, empathy and, yes, beauty.”

In related news, Rooney’s first novel, Conversations with Friends, is also due to be adapted into a 12-episode mini-series for BBC and Hulu, with the same creative team behind the adaptation of Normal People set to work on the new project.
