The village pub was praised by Michelin inspectors for its charm and character.

There are hidden gems to discover all over this island of ours – the kind of pubs you’ll only stumble across if you get talking to locals in the area who deem you worthy of stopping in for a pint, family-run restaurants with better seafood options than you’d find anywhere in the world, bars that are also newsagents and hardware shops with family living rooms visible through a door behind the till – you know the kind.

So it makes sense that Michelin inspectors take themselves all over the country to discover establishments food lovers may not otherwise come across, and showcase them for the world to see.

The most recent Irish addition to their guide is The Olde Glen Bar, one of Donegal’s oldest pubs (Circa 1768) which has more than successfully retained its character over the years.

The Olde Glen kitchen was taken over in 2021 by chef Ciarán Sweeney, who has been putting his own unique spin on Donegal produce ever since.

The Michelin Guide said of the bar:

This remote inn dates from the 1760s, and its somewhat modest façade gives little indication as to the charm and character that lies within. The bar is always filled with locals, and the large dining room plays host to a set menu which boasts plenty of fish and shellfish from nearby shores, including local oysters and house-smoked salmon; while the fermented potato bread gets things off to a great start. There are cosy bedrooms available too.”

The Olde Glen was also awarded Pub of the Year in 2021 by Ireland’s Guide.
