The airport had been closed since 11pm last night due to “unexpected heavy fog conditions”.

Shannon Airport has reopened after being closed for most of the morning due to a bout of heavy fog.

The fog set in while the airport was carrying out “essential” taxiway maintenance work, with a number of flights in and out being delayed or cancelled as a result. Ryanair and Aer Lingus services were among those affected.

In a statement on Twitter, Shannon Airport advised passengers to check their flight status directly with the airline in advance of travelling to the airport.

The Airport have since released a statement to confirm it was completely reopened after the earlier disruption. They added that delays may continue though, writing:

“As a result of the earlier temporary closure, there will be some disruptions to the flight schedule throughout the day. We regret any inconvenience this may cause to our passengers”.

Those flying from Shannon or collecting people are still advised to check flight details directly with the relevant airline before making their way to the airport.
