Gina would definitely not be happy about this… this the opposite of giving people what they want.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine show creators have revealed that the upcoming season will be the end of the road for Jake Peralta and the 99th precinct, announcing the news none of us wanted to hear and confirming that the programme will end after eight seasons and 153 episodes.

A statement posted online reads:

“Det. Jake Peralta and the squad will be gathering for one final stakeout as NBC will air the eighth and final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine during the 2021-22 television season.”

The proud winner of the 2014 Golden Globe for ‘Best TV Comedy Series’ at its first official awards season, the programme has amassed quite a cult following since then with it later being described as “one of the most beloved and critically applauded comedies of all-time”.

Thanking the fans for their continued support, co-creator Dan Goor posted a lengthy message on Instagram, saying: “I know some people will be disappointed it’s ending so soon, but honestly, I’m grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape.”

Channelling his inner Jake Peralta with that line.

Initially expected to have its US debut in autumn 2020, things didn’t go as smoothly as first hoped and production has been delayed until later in the year. Due to resume filming in the coming weeks, no premiere date for the final season has been announced as of yet.

Season seven – the penultimate season – of the show will land on Irish Netflix towards the latter end of next month though, so at least we have that to look forward to.

I started with a Gina quote, may as well finish with one too and this one feels particularly apt. So from me, a fan, to those responsible for giving the series the chop – “No hard feelings, but I hate you. Not joking. Bye.”
