Storm Agnes: Met Éireann issues weather warnings due to incoming storm

Batten down the hatches.

Met Éireann has issued weather warnings impacting 24 counties as Storm Agnes is set to land in Ireland later in the week.

In a statement on Monday morning (25 September), Weather Alerts Ireland said that weather models are “mainly showing” that Ireland will see “some strong winds” from the storm.

“Winds do not seem as strong as they were earlier in the forecast window but still strong winds especially in the south of the country,” it said.

“Still little differences on how close the system will get to Ireland and this will determine how far strong winds will venture inland.

“The high resolution models will hopefully bring more clarity this evening.”

“These are updates based on the current models. It is difficult to predict wind paths for this system as it is developing so fast with the jet stream.”

Storm Agnes set to sweep Ireland as weather warnings issued

Storm Agnes was named on Monday morning as Met Éireann issued two Status Yellow warnings which are scheduled to be in effect from 7am to midnight on Wednesday.

One is a wind alert that applies to the provinces of Leinster and Munster.

“Becoming very windy on Wednesday with very strong and gusty southerly winds, veering westerly later on,” it reads.

Met Éireann lists the possible impacts of the wind as “coastal flooding, difficult travel conditions, power outages [and] some fallen trees”.

The other alert is for rain and applies to Carlow, Cork, Dublin, Kerry, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.

The warning states that there will be “heavy rain on Wednesday” with the potential impacts of this listed as “difficult travel conditions, localised flooding [and] poor visibility”.

Met Éireann also said updates to the warnings will follow.
