One Of The Worst Irish-Based Movies Ever Made Is On TV Tonight

Darragh Berry

Sometimes, you want to sit down after a long day at work and just watch something good on the box.

And then, there’s other times where you want to watch something pure muck and laugh with your housemates or other half about how rubbish it is.

“How bad is The Jackal?”, we hear you ask.

It features Richard Gere who doesn’t even attempt to put on an Irish accent (his attempt is so bad, that people often question what accent he was supposed to be doing) and would it be an action movie if Bruce Willis wasn’t involved?

It’s described as a “glum and curiously flat thriller” where an imprisoned IRA fighter is freed to help stop a brutal, seemingly “faceless” assassin from completing his next job.

In Russia, when a FBI deputy director and scarred Russian intelligence officer bring down a key figure in the Russian Mafia, they are threatened by the criminal’s powerful brother who swears vengeance on the FBI and immediately hires a professional assassin, the Jackal (Bruce Willis) to kill a leading American political figure.

The Jackal demands a shit load of money for the job also, he doesn’t come for cheap.

The FBI begin to shit a brick and consult in a former terrorist and an IRA operative Declan Mulqueen (Richard Gere) who is currently serving a prison sentence.

Gere is promised leniency, if he agrees to help and he does.

It’s received a 21% rating on Rotten tomatoes and 36% on Metacritic but IMDb gave it a slightly better 64%

It was released in 1997 and did make a nice profit at the cinema, totalling at $160m against a $60m budget.

If you’re interested in having witnessed one of the worst Irish movies ever, The Jackal is on SyFy at 9pm on Wednesday night.
