Woman (60s) Critical And Man Hospitalised After Car Plunges Into River

A woman in her 60s is fighting for her life after the car she was occupying with her husband was pulled from the Swilly Burn River In Co. Donegal. 

According to the Irish Mirror, the car left a nearby road and the couple were saved after two passers-by pulled them the vehicle. The incident occurred just before 6.30pm on Saturday evening.

The man and woman, both in their 60s, were taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry where the woman is understood to be in a critical condition. 

They have been named locally as Philip and Loreta McKinlay from Lifford. Their golden retriever dog managed to escape and was found a short time later. 

Garda Inspector Michael Harrison said:

“At this stage we are still keeping an open mind on the cause of the crash.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area and witnessed the car leaving the road and entering the water to get in touch.”
