Unions representing Bus Éireann Drivers say a strike is to be expected sooner rather than later.

The news comes after it emerged that the company are planning to separate their loss-making Expressway service from the rest of the company. They are also contemplating changing terms and conditions for staff working in that division.

According to RTÉ, Chief Executive Martin Nolan wrote a letter to employees in which he said:

“It is proposed to sub-contract a number of routes within the plan but it is expected that all routes currently operated will continue to operate.”

He also communicated details of losses experienced by the company including ones of €5.6 million in 2015 and projected losses of €6 million for 2016.

A new campaign was launched in June of this year to promote the inter-regional Expressway brand.

With no resolution to the ongoing Dublin Bus strikes on the horizon, this latest news is an added low to commuters up and down the country.
