1. Slieve Donard Walking Route, Co Down

  • 9km in length
  • Too challenging for young children
  • Dog friendly
  • Nearest town is Newcastle

2. The Wicklow Way Long Distance Walking Trail, Co Dublin/Wicklow

  • 132km in length but you can join at various places to make it shorter (obviously)
  • Great for mountain biking a well as walking
  • Dog and child friendly
  • Closest town to the start point is Rathfarnham in Dublin

3. Mount Brandon Walking Route, Dingle Peninsula, Co Kerry

  • 8km long
  • Too tough for young children
  • Takes up to 4 hours
  • Nearest town is Dingle

4. Connemara Way, Co Galway

  • 55km in length
  • Will take two full days to complete
  • Oughterard is the start town
  • No dogs allowed

5. The Sheep’s Head Way, Co Cork

  • 200km in length but can join at multiple stages
  • Nearest town to start is Bantry
  • Would take four days to complete in full
  • No dogs allowed

6. The Glen of Aherlow, Co Tipperary

  • Eight walks ranging in difficulty; all looped
  • One to eight hours depending which you choose
  • Dogs and bikes welcome
  • Guided walks available

7. The Slieve Blooms, Co Laois and Co Offaly

  • 60km in length
  • 1250m in total climb
  • Two days to complete in full
  • Start point in Glenbarrow

8. The Burren Way, Co Clare

  • 114km in total, across some of the most beautiful landscape the country has to offer
  • Start point is Lahinch
  • Five days if you were to do the entire walk, but easily broken up
  • Parking at start and finish

9. Cronin’s Yard Loopm, MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, Co Kerry

  • Stunning looped walk
  • 8km in total
  • 2.5 hours to complete
  • No dogs allowed

10. Glendalough Lake Walk, Co Wicklow

  • Stunning two-hour walk around the lake
  • More challenging walks in the area too
  • Plenty of parking and facilities
  • Dogs allowed and parts of walk easy for young children

11. Howth Cliff Walk, Co Dublin

  • Gorgeous scenery, and simple terrain
  • About 1-2 hours depending on speed
  • Dog- and child-friendly
  • Ideal to combine with seafood in the village

12. The Great Western Greenway, Westport To Achill, Co Mayo

  • Over 42km in full but broken into multiple shorter sections
  • Start in either Achill or Westport
  • Ample parking along the trail
  • Ideal for bikes

13. Bray To Greystones Cliff Walk, Co Wicklow

  • Stunning coastal walk
  • 7km long
  • About 1.5 hours
  • Ample parking and food/drink options at both ends

14. Grand Canal Way, Dublin To Shannon

  • Start in either Lucan or Shannon Harbour
  • 117km long
  • 5 days’ walking or a good day’s cycling
  • Suitable for families with older children

  • 12km
  • Around three hours
  • Country lanes, green roadways, riverbank and open mountain

18. Táin Way, Louth

  • 40km long
  • Two days to complete at your ease
  • Loops into Carlingford at start and finish
  • No dogs allowed

  • Head to Westport
  • Two hours to reach the summit and 1.5 to descend
  • Excellent services and parking at the site
  • Can be super busy at peak (no pun intended) times

  • Stunning views from along the cliffs which are 500m above sea level
  • Closest town is Teelin
  • More experienced walkers only
