Connect with your inner poet with inspiration from the gorgeous Powerscourt Gardens

Fiona Frawley

If you’ve been looking for a way to get the creative juices flowing and are a bit of a nature lover, read on.

Powerscourt Estate have launched an initiative to encourage people to connect with and be inspired by nature and imagination, and are looking for submissions of poems, lyrics or spoken word pieces as part of their “Poetry in Bloom” initiative.

“Poetry in Bloom” is the brainchild of Powerscourt Estate and creative writing organisation Fighting Words, and is supported by Irish Hollywood actor Patrick Bergin. Patrick is a lover of poetry and long time supporter of creative initiatives for young people in Dublin and beyond. He will be reading through the submissions to Poetry in Bloom and helping to select a number of poems to be used as a basis for a short poetry film as part of the initiative.

Entries are encouraged from those aged 7 and up, so if there’s a budding Seamus Heaney or Eavan Boland in your life, encourage them to get involved with a piece inspired by nature they’ve observed at the Powerscourt Gardens and Waterfall!

Speaking about the collaboration, managing director of Powerscourt Estate Sarah Slazenger said:

We are also very aware of the importance of spending time in nature and believe that being
inspired by the outdoors and letting your creativity flow can make some difference to people’s
mental health. We are also dedicated to highlighting the need to protect the natural world, this has always been our guiding star from the time my grandfather bought the Estate initially, to generate hydropower from Powerscourt Waterfall. This tradition of custodianship continues to this day with our present journey to achieving accreditation as a Sustainable Tourism Destination.

Submissions close on Tuesday 31st of August and within that time every visitor to the Powerscourt Gardens are encouraged to immerse themselves in the nature of the place and be inspired.
