Kaiseki style Michelin-star restaurant in Cork to close ahead of rebrand

Chef Takashi Miyazaki is heading in a more casual direction.

Ichigo Ichie, a kaiseki style Michelin-starred restaurant in Cork has decided to rebrand as a casual bistro in January 2024.

Kaiseki style dining is a Japanese tradition of a multi-course meal; there are very few restaurants who serve food in this style in Ireland, so it is a shame to lose one of the most prestigious in the country.

Ichigo Ichie describes what it does as “sanctuary dining“, where guests are “inspired to leave behind thoughts
of the future and the past, and to savour the perfect present in the
 food before them.”

The Cork restaurant took to Instagram to share the news of their rebrand, that their last service as a kaiseki restaurant would be December 23rd. The casual bistro, which goes by the name of Ichigo Ichie Bistro & Natural Wine, will instead serve sharing plates, rice bowl dishes, and the first “Teuchi soba” (handmade buckwheat noodles) dishes to be found in Ireland.

Ichigo Ichie earned its Michelin star for its high quality cooking, creative omakase menu, time-honoured Japanese techniques, and its incredibly knowledgeable team.

The Irish Examiner questioned whether Ichigo Ichie might be at risk of losing their star when they make the switch from kaseiki style dining to casual bistro.

We’ll just have to wait and see.
