Cork’s former Pavilion Cinema to reopen ‘in spectacular fashion’

After a long period of ‘careful renovation and restoration’, Cork City’s Pavilion Cinema will reopen as an event space and cocktail bar this week.

Originally opened in 1921, the cinema has had many lives during this time – it ceased operation as a cinema in August of 1989, then making way for a nightclub which remained open until July 2014. During this time it hosted a number of acts including Kanye West during an impromptu performance in 2009.

After a four year absence it reopened as Dali, an electronic and alternative music venue, before closing completely as a result of the pandemic. It’s now set to return to its former glory as a glitzy cinema space with many of its original features restored.

As you walk in the door of the entrance on Carey’s Lane (which used to serve as the main point of entry for ticket holders back in the day) you’ll now be met with Intermission, a new cocktail bar with a carefully curated selection of speciality drinks. If cocktails aren’t your thing, fear not – there’s a full wine and beer menu with Beamish sitting pride of place – it is Cork after all.

The new and improved Pav promises to “bring you back to a golden era in Cork City’s heritage” with restored vaulted ceiling and original mouldings setting the tone inside the refurbished cinema. As well as the cocktail bar and the cinema itself, there’s also a multifunctional arts space.
