Part of an initiative called Imagination Library, the free book gifting project was first launched by Dolly Parton back in 1995 with the aim being to encourage reading amongst young children.
Dolly Parton has gifted thousands of free books to Irish readers, with young children down in Cork the lucky recipients of the generous donation. Part of the singer’s Imagination Library initiative, the project was first put in motion back in the mid-90s and has seen Parton donation close to 150 million books worldwide since then.
Making its way to Ireland last year, the free book programme kicked off for the first time in Tallaght with the scheme now heading south to its second Irish location in the Rebel County.
Open to young readers in a number of different areas (including – Knocknaheeny, Hollyhill, Gurranabraher, Churchfield, Mahon, Carrigtwohill, Ashbourne House and Kinsale Road Accommodation Centre), once registered, children will receive a personalised monthly book posted directly to their home until they reach the age of five – completely free of charge.

Hand-selected by the Gold Medal Book Selection Committee, each title is chosen to meet the “growing needs” of the child at that point in their development.
