It’s been lashing rain in Cork this week and the forecast isn’t showing much sign of improvement.
That doesn’t mean that you should be confined to your gaff as there’s plenty of fun to be found inside the walls of the city’s museums, bars and cafés.

Cork City Gaol
Take a trip back in time at this former prison which dates back to 1824.
You can easily spend an afternoon checking out the cells which housed inmates throughout the 19th century and up as far as the War Of Independence when Constance Markievicz was held here.
The museum is open from 9.30am until 5pm from April to September and 10am to 4pm from October to March.

Grab a coffee at Idaho
Cosy up in this Caroline Street haunt and watch the raindrops fall slowly down the window.

One of the most character-filled places to wander around no matter the weather, the English Market has long been a jewel in the crown of Cork City.
Weather you’re hungry or thirsty, there’s plenty of things to grab along your way. If it’s good enough for the Young Offenders, it’s good enough for us.

Crawford Art Gallery
A three-floor gallery, Crawford hosts a wide range of exhibitions and is free in to wander around at your leisure.
The permanent collection comprises almost 4,000 works, ranging from eighteenth century Irish and European painting and sculpture, through to contemporary video installations and staff are on hand to point out interesting bits of info about each room.

Go for a drink
When all else fails, go and wet your whistle.
Cork is heaving with authentic pubs, all boasting warm atmospheres which will have you dried off in no time.
The coal fire in Charlie’s on Union Quay will make you want to stay all day while An Bodhrán is an homage Rory Gallagher and 70s Phil Lynott.
Those are just two options but wherever you are in the city, you’re sure to no more than a few feet from a fine establishment.
