Cork Science Festival kicks off this weekend, with something for science lovers of all ages

Fiona Frawley

Have you got a budding scientist at home who’s looking for something fun to do this weekend?

Cork Science Festival gets underway this Saturday, with an amazing lineup of events scheduled for the next two weeks.

The festival will bring with it fun and accessible science for people of all ages and interests across Cork. You can expect everything from free at home science kits, to live science shows, interactive workshops, online talks, video content and streaming and a festival reading list.

In terms of public events, there’ll be live family science shows on 13th and 14th November at Cork’s Marina Market where you can learn about the ‘Science of Bubbles’ with Scientific Sue and ‘The Science of Dragons’ with a show looking at the science of fire and flight, inspired by the Cressida Cowell books ‘How to Train Your Dragon’. Tickets for these events can be booked now via the Cork Science Festival WEBSITE.

There’s lots to choose from, but highlights of Cork Science Festival include:

  • Explorers CSI – Squid Science Investigations, 6 Nov
  • The Fantastic Dna Virtual Workshop for kids 10+ (with kits pre delivered to those who registered to receive these in advance), 6 Nov.
  • ‘Photonics for Everyone’ an online talk from The Centre for Advanced Photonics & Process Analysis (CAPPA) as well as virtual tours of their state-of-the-art labs at MTU and Tyndall National Institute, 6 Nov.
  • The ‘What’s an astronaut’ online talk, 10 Nov

And it wouldn’t be a Cork science event without an appearance from one of the county’s most beloved science lovers, Toy Show star Adam King who’s an official festival ambassador this year.
