This Cork town wants to break the world record for most Harry Potters

Sarah Finnan

Harry Potter and the world record attempt.

Have you always wanted to be a world record holder? Well, this is your chance, so listen up.

Join the good people of Bandon in Co. Cork and help them make history.

Aiming to break the old record of the most Harry Potters in the same place at the same time, more than 997 people will have to turn up if they’re to be successful.

Taking place on Saturday, October 26, counting will begin at Fish Market corner on South Main Street from 4pm onwards.

In order to qualify as a ‘wizard’, each participant must fit the following criteria: wear a cloak/cape, have a wand, wear a tie and glasses, have a lightning-shaped Harry Potter scar.

Simples.

Looks like Bandon isn’t the only one on a quest for greatness though as a Wizarding Festival in Sheffield, on the same weekend, intends to try and claim the record for themselves. Challenge accepted.

Running as part of the inaugural Taste of Bandon Festival (October 25 to 27), there will be plenty of “food and frolics” to keep the whole family happy.

Events on offer include a kitchen spells and forgotten skills preserving workshop, a heavenly Halloween junior bake-off and even an introduction to knitting tutorial where you can learn to knit your very own Hogwarts’ scarf.

Join the BUTTERBEER TRAIL: A stalwart of flavour in Bandon, there isn’t a person in town who hasn’t succumbed to the deliciousness of Barbara and Joe’s baking at Heaven's CakesTheir presence in the Bandon baking world is well established, with a presence in town for over 23 years, first in the farmer’s market and then 6 years ago into their premises. From patisserie style cakes and bakes, savoury tarts and tantalising bread all aspects of taste are covered. From sourdough to date and treacle their breads are unsurpassable (Date, Walnut and Treacle bread is one of the most amazing flavours you will ever try). Keen supporters of our local community, they are delighted to be part of our Butterbeer trail and look forward to providing some tantalising treats to sample. Not only are they participating in our Butterbeer trail, Barbara has kindly agreed to be one of the Judges in our Second Halloween Junior Bake-Off which takes place on the Sunday. She looks forward to viewing the upcoming talent and finding our Star Bakers. Wear your house colours with pride.

Home to the Bandon Banshee, defeated by Gilderoy Lockhart (or should I say supposedly defeated…we all know his reputation) in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, it would only be right for them to hold the record too.

Break out the dress robes, but “no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations” please and thank you.

Keep up to date here.
